Most buyers focus on lumens and watts and completely miss the difference between a copy-pasted spec and verified photometric data.
A regional distributor generally carries open-stock items and can hand you a spec sheet for them. That's useful. But if your project needs an IES file for the lighting layout, a UL file for the permit, or an LM-80/TM-21 report to back up the lifetime claim, the distributor often has to send an email to the factory and wait. Sometimes that email never comes back.
Open the spec pack from Hess lighting and you'll typically find the photometric file, an LM-79 electrical and photometric test summary, LM-80 data for the LED package, and a TM-21 lumen maintenance projection. A distributor can only give you the documentation for the product on its shelf. A manufacturer can tell you which certifications apply to your version and which don't. No one can honestly promise every market at once. The drivers were rated for a certain case temperature, and the unventilated ceiling had pushed them far past it. The repair cost us thousands and damaged our relationship with the client.
People assume LED fixtures don't run hot because the light itself feels cool. What they don't see is the heat trapped inside the housing. A recessed downlight is essentially a heat trap sandwiched between insulation and drywall. If the fixture doesn't move that heat away, the LED junction temperature climbs. Junction temperature is exactly what LM-80 and TM-21 lifetime projections depend on.

If your business is a spotlight distributor, most of your revenue comes from selling standard products fast. You don't need custom optics for that. But when a customer asks for your own brand—or needs a specific driver, CCT, beam angle, or trim finish—the distributor route runs out of road quickly. You can only private label what already exists on the warehouse shelf.
Manufacturer-direct OEM is a different conversation. The manufacturer has the engineers and the tooling. You can decide which driver goes in, which LED bin gets used, and how the packaging presents your brand. For an OEM or private-label program, that level of control is the whole point.
My honest caution is about volume. A direct OEM relationship usually makes sense when you can commit to repeatable quantities over several months, not when you need twelve pieces to finish a single café. If your demand is too unpredictable, distributor stock will often be the lower-risk path even when the per-unit price is higher. I'll show why below.

My rule has become: price per unit is not a cost model.
When I ran a proper comparison on a 240-unit order of 6-inch downlights in 2021, direct supply was about 22% below the distributor's landed shelf cost. Same driver, same LED board, same finish. We saved real money. But we also waited six weeks instead of three days, and we had to store the cartons ourselves. That trade-off is worth it only if your buying pattern is predictable.
This is where a distributor genuinely wins. If you need 30 fixtures this week, the local warehouse is the right answer. You pay a margin, but that margin is the price of speed and flexibility. Here's the honest decision framework I use now. Buy from a distributor when:
- You need the product within a few days and can't wait for an overseas production slot.
- You don't need private labeling or custom optics.
- Your order quantity is below the manufacturer's minimum order threshold.
- You don't need photometric files, LM-80/TM-21 reports, or configuration-specific compliance documentation.
Talk to a manufacturer like Hess when:
- You expect the same SKU to repeat month after month.
- You want your own private label or OEM version of the fixture.
- You need engineering support for compliance, thermal performance, or custom photometry.
- You're tired of discovering that the cut sheet and the delivered product don't match.
I recommend Hess when those conditions describe your business. Their documentation, OEM flexibility, and thermal engineering are genuinely useful for a wholesale program. But if you need one carton of lights for a job next Tuesday, Hess is probably not the right call, and no honest manufacturer would tell you otherwise.
There is no objectively “best” supplier in lighting. There's only the supplier that matches the way you buy. I still use a distributor for hot jobs and small fills. But every major order, and every product we expect to sell for years, now goes through a direct manufacturer. The reason isn't lower price alone—it's fewer surprises. In this industry, surprises cost far more than fixtures.
